About Us

Calvin started working in and around boat shops as a young boy, helping the old time boat builders of Beals build their boats. Calvin helped others until he built his own wooden, 22' lobster boat in 1969. The next big lobster boat he built was for his father-in-law and it was a 35' wooden boat named the Octavia A, built in 1973.

From there on out he was building wooden boats for himself and ending up selling them, usually before they were finished. He also built and designed plugs for molds for different fiberglass boat shops. Calvin worked on these wooden boats and plugs until he built his own molds for fiberglass boats in the late '90s. He started with the 36, then proceeded to the 38, 34 and then recently, the 44.

He has built 125 boats at this point in time. Thinking of retiring, Calvin decided to sell the molds to SW Boatworks in Lamoine, Maine, to take over the production of his 34, 36, 38, 44 models. The molds are up and going and fiberglass boats are being delivered with pride to watermen worldwide. There are many uses for these boats, and they are wanted by all!

In 2011, SW Boatworks added the 46 Calvin Beal to its line of boats, giving customers more of a variety to choose from.

In the summer of 2011 SW Boatworks is also coming out with another brand new model, the "New 30 Calvin Beal" (L-30 x W-12 Transom 11'6"). This boat has many uses but idealy it will make a wonderful inshore lobsterboat or a very spacious and comfortable (stable) day boat/sportfish boat. It is designed for great speeds with light fuel efficient power.
